Minecraft Java Edition Now Recommends 16GB of RAM as Mojang Prepares for Vulkan

 

Minecraft: Java Edition has received its biggest system requirements update in years, with Mojang now recommending 16GB of system memory and a significantly more modern graphics platform. The change comes as the game prepares to move away from OpenGL and toward Vulkan.

For years, Minecraft has been one of the easiest major PC games to run on aging hardware. That reputation is beginning to change.

Mojang has updated the official system requirements for Minecraft: Java Edition, raising the recommended system memory from 4GB to 16GB. The minimum requirement has also increased, with systems using a dedicated GPU now requiring 8GB of RAM, while machines relying on integrated graphics require 12GB.

The update does not necessarily mean that Minecraft has suddenly become a demanding game. Instead, Mojang says its previous requirements were based on much older hardware and graphics technology and no longer represented what players need for a smooth experience today.

16GB Does Not Mean Minecraft Needs 16GB by Itself

The headline figure can be misleading.

The recommended 16GB refers to total system memory, rather than 16GB being allocated exclusively to Minecraft. Java Edition currently reserves 4GB by default, while the rest of the system memory remains available for Windows or other operating systems, the launcher, background applications and, in some configurations, integrated graphics.

That distinction matters, particularly for players who may interpret the new specification as a requirement for 16GB of RAM dedicated solely to the game.

Mojang's updated specifications instead establish a broader hardware target for running the game comfortably at modern resolutions and frame rates.

The New Hardware Baseline

The new minimum target is 1080p at 30 frames per second using the Fast graphics preset. The recommended target moves to 1080p at 60 FPS with the Fancy preset.

The recommended graphics cards are therefore considerably newer than the hardware traditionally associated with Minecraft. The recommended tier starts around the level of the GeForce RTX 2060, Radeon RX 5600 XT and Intel Arc A580, with 6GB of VRAM.

Vulkan Is the Bigger Story

Despite the attention surrounding the 16GB RAM recommendation, the most significant part of the update may actually be the graphics API requirement.

Minecraft: Java Edition has historically relied on OpenGL, a technology that has helped the game maintain broad hardware compatibility for many years. Mojang introduced an experimental Vulkan renderer in Java Edition 26.2, released in June 2026, and plans to remove OpenGL once the Vulkan implementation reaches the necessary levels of stability and performance.

Vulkan gives developers a more modern graphics foundation and can provide greater control over how the game communicates with the GPU. For Minecraft, the transition could help support future rendering improvements while reducing some of the limitations associated with its older graphics architecture.

It also means that some very old hardware may eventually reach the end of the road.

Mojang says that systems below the new minimum requirements should still be able to launch Java Edition for now, but performance and visual quality are no longer guaranteed. As development moves further toward Vulkan, compatibility with older hardware is expected to become increasingly difficult.

A Major Change for Minecraft's PC Legacy

Minecraft's ability to run on almost anything has been an important part of its identity. The game has remained accessible to users with older laptops, office PCs and entry-level hardware long after those machines stopped being suitable for most modern games.

The new requirements do not completely abandon that philosophy. Mojang's recommended hardware remains modest compared with the requirements of many contemporary AAA games.

What has changed is the definition of a good Minecraft experience.

Instead of simply asking whether a computer can launch the game, the new specifications establish a clearer performance target. Players can now look at the requirements in terms of 1080p resolution, frame rate, graphics presets, modern CPUs and Vulkan support.

Vulkan Could Also Open the Door to Better Visuals

The move to Vulkan is not only about compatibility and performance.

Mojang says the transition also prepares Java Edition for future graphical improvements, including Vibrant Visuals. The visual technology is already available in Bedrock Edition and introduces more advanced lighting, shadows, reflective water and volumetric effects. Mojang has not yet confirmed when the complete feature set will arrive in Java Edition.

That makes the new hardware requirements more significant than a simple RAM increase.

Minecraft is effectively entering a new phase of its PC graphics development. The game is moving away from technology that has defined its rendering stack for much of its history and toward a more modern architecture designed to support future improvements.

Existing Players Do Not Need to Upgrade Immediately

For current Java Edition players, the updated specifications do not mean that an immediate hardware upgrade is mandatory.

If Minecraft already runs well on an existing PC, the new requirements are unlikely to suddenly prevent the game from launching. The bigger concern is long-term compatibility as Mojang continues its transition toward Vulkan and eventually moves further away from OpenGL.

In other words, the 16GB recommendation is less of an emergency upgrade warning and more of a signpost for where Minecraft is heading.

After years of maintaining remarkably low hardware requirements, Minecraft: Java Edition is finally raising the bar. The memory increase is the most visible part of the story, but Vulkan is likely to have the greatest long-term impact.

For a game famous for running on almost anything, that marks the beginning of a very different era.
