Nineties toy craze Tamagotchi is being relaunched in the UK by Bandai in the form of Tamagotchi Friends.

The original has sold 80 million units since first landing in the UK 1997 and it will be back on shelves to coincide with its 17th birthday.

The brand new Tamagotchi Friends will be on general sale from Boxing Day and will retain the nineties look, but using new technology, owners can now 'bump' other owners to send each other texts, gifts and even go on dates.

The more they 'bump' the more points and rewards will be earned while also raising their best friend meter.

Tamagotchi Friends also includes new characters, five games, a pause function, on-off sound and a level of interaction with the brand new Tamagotchi Friends website.

Like the original, owners will still need to feed their Tamagotchi when it’s hungry, give it medicine when it’s sick, clean up after its been to the toilet and play games to earn Gotchi points which can be used to buy meals, snacks and jewellery in the shop.

“In the 90s, Tamagotchi paved the way for a digital age in toys so we are incredibly excited to be giving the hugely popular, classic toy a modern day update," said Bandai marketing director, Darrell Jones, who worked on the original Tamagotchi launch.

"The innovative features, including the new characters and the short range communication ‘bump’ feature, will entertain a whole new generation of Tamagotchi fans.

"We're really looking forward to seeing Tamagotchi being welcomed into homes and playgrounds across the country, and once again becoming an important member of everyone's family.”

Tamagotchi Friends are priced at £24.99 and are available to pre-order now from The Entertainer and Amazon and go on general sale on December 26th from Argos, Smyths Toys Superstores, Toys R Us, Toymaster and other major retailers.
