Nintendo has revealed its plans to take a leaf from the Skylanders and Disney Infinity book with a collection of Mario-themed figures.
Under the name NFP (NFC Featured Platform of Nintendo Figurine Platform), the range will be compatible with both the Nintendo Wii U and 3DS, reports MCV.
Similar to the Skylanders and Disney Infinity lines, Ninetondo’s collection will use infra-red to communicate with the handheld and the Wii U’s in-built NFC tech.
The prototype was unveiled by Nintendo through its website and will be aimed at the gaming and collectors market.
“The figurines, which consumers can buy and collect, are going to work with multiple software titles to be released in the future, and we are aiming to develop more software titles compatible with the figurines,” said Nintendo boss, Saturo Iwata.
“Nintendo has a lot of well-known character IP that has originated in video games and I believe a brand new type of platform will be born when the character IP becomes compatible with NFP.
“There are not only going to be decorative boxes for video game hardware and packages for software, but Nintendo character figurines will also be displayed on shelves.”
Nintendo’s NFP figures are due out later this year for Wii U, with 3DS versions scheduled for 2015.
