Nintendo has revealed the first swathe of toys to feature in its new video game franchise, Amiibo.

Pikachu and Link will be among the first 12 characters to take to the stage when the collection is released later this year.

The line-up will also include popular Nintendo characters such as Princess Peach, Yoshi, donkey Kong, Samus Aran, Kirby and Fox McCloud.

Also appearing in the line-up will be the Wii Fit Trainer and the Villager from Animal Crossing.

Similar to Activision’s Skylanders and Disney Infinity, the characters will be playable through the Wii U GamePad through near field communication.

The toys will first be compatible with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, reports Eurogamer.
