Activision has launched the latest in its Skylanders franchise, giving kids the chance to create their own toys through the new Skaylanders Imaginators.

This year’s Skylanders game hands power back to children with a new flexible character creator. This lets players create their own heroes before taking on the new action adventure story.

Skylanders Imaginators, as it’s called, offers tools previously the preserve of developers to let kids pick legs, torso, bodies and adornments before sizing and colouring their creations. There’s even the ability to construct a catch-phrase for each character.

To play the new game you need a Starter Pack, but it will support all your old toys (of which there are now around 300). In fact the only items not used this year are 2014’s Traps.

The game itself looks familiar but with an added sheen of finesse. On PlayStation (the version demonstrated) it looks super sharp and bristling with colour. Add to this the ability to bring in your custom hero and it all looks pretty strong.

There are 20 new Sensei Skylanders that help you develop the characters you have created. To access all the special parts in the game you will need some more of these, but all Skylanders earn new parts to add to your creation as you play.

There are also 11 new villain Skylanders this year, something fans have long asked for. Putting players in control of Kaos or Glimshanks (if these two are included) will make for super popular toys.

The game will continue to include multi-player modes as well as the kart racing experience from last year. So far no news on whether this means more modes or if there will be more Nintendo amiibo cross-over Skylanders.

At the reveal event it all looking strong. There was no mention of being able to get your character creations out the game and in physical form, but it seems likely that Activision will partner with a 3D printer of some sort to make this happen — or perhaps offer a postal service. Matters Thing Maker could be a possible candidate for this kind of collaboration.

With Disney Infinity being cancelled, there is certainly more pocket-money on the table to play for. While some were expecting a paired down version of Skylanders this year it’s good to see Activision come out with all guns blazing.

Skylanders Imaginators will be available later in the year on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo platforms.
