Activision has announced the next chapter in its popular toy-meets-video-game franchise, Skylanders: Trap Team.

Featuring a new portal, Skylanders: Trap Team allows fans and players to use a new Trap toy to ensnare and then play as defeated Skylanders’ enemies.

Trap Team will support all 175 previous Skylanders toys, while offering a further 50 new figures, including new Trap master characters with translucent weapons and returning Core Skylanders.

The starter pack comes with two figures, Snap Shot a Trap Master, Food Fight a new core character, the new Portal and two Trap keys.

The new portal replaces the previous version from Swap Force and features a speaker, used to animate each enemy’s journey from the TV to the Trap, allowing the villains to communicate with the player.

Players need a Trap key of the matching Element to the enemy if they are to capture them. While two come with the game this leaves (at least) a further six to collect. It also opens a new retail line for Skylanders as they can sell novel variants of these keys through the year – a lot like the Disney Infinity Power discs.

Talking to Jeff Poffenbarger, Executive Producer for Skyladners, it was interesting to hear the developer’s ongoing focus on lower tech consoles such as the Wii, 360 and PS3. Toys for Bob is looking after the Wii, 360 and PS3 versions rather than the next gen games that are being handled by Beenox. This will give greater impetus for the now aging (but popular) Wii version of the game.

Check out the interview with Poffenbarger below:

Poffenbarger also hinted that Trap Team will include female heroes of their titular characters, with female Trap Masters arriving soon.

Skylanders Trap Team will release on Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Playstation 3 and Playstation 4 on October 4th in the UK.
