Toys R Us has discontinued online sales as the retailer continues its winding down operations.

The one-time toy giant’s online operations are now ‘non transactional’ with a message alerting shoppers at both Toys R Us and Babies R Us that ‘we have shut down the website for any purchases, but our brick and mortar stores are open and holding going out of business sales.’

Existing orders, made before the closure of the websites, will still proceed.

The message also referred people to a FAQ page on the liquidation event, which notes that gift cards – including e-gift cards – can be used in stores through April 21.

Relentless competition from the likes of Amazon and Walmart, along with over $5bn in debt from a 2005 leveraged buyout ultimately led to the demise of Toys R Us. The company filed Chapter 11 last September before making the decision to shut down earlier this year.
