The Puppet Company has become the latest toy firm to stop suppling companies trading on third party websites, such as Amazon and eBay, from August 1st.

Peter Lockey, director of The Puppet Company, said: "We have received numerous complaints from customers about our puppets being offered on third party websites such as Amazon and eBay, which is creating problems for many of our accounts both small and large. We also receive regular complaints from shops telling us that customers are checking prices online, standing in their shop using their smart phones and then buying puppets online when the shop cannot price match.

"We realise that this will be an unwelcome decision for some companies, but we are trying to protect our independent and multiple shop owners who have been loyal customers for many years. We hope you will understand that we have taken this difficult decision to safeguard all our customers and maintain the reputation of our brand.

"To maintain our company profile online, we intend to offer Puppet Company products omline ourselves at full recommended retail prices, therefore creating a level playing field for all accounts. We have already made a start by closing Amazon's House account with us.

"Whilst we cannot prevent sales on third party websites such as Amazon, we can choose with whom we wish to trade and it is on this basis that we have decided to implement this policy. We want to stress, however, that this doesn not mean you cannot sell our products on your own website.

"Time will tell if this decision achieves results, but as an ex-shop owner myself, I felt we had to do something to try and support our many loyal bricks and mortar customers."

Bigjigs Toys announced last month that it would cut off retailers selling its stock on third party sites. Read the full story here.
