The Entertainer has detailed its plans to open a further 18 stores this year with ‘significantly more’ to follow in 2016.

The move follows a strong year of trading for the family run toy retailer that culminated in a surge in pre-tax profits of 27 per cent to £7.6 million for the year ending January 31st.

Total sales increased 20.8 per cent to £129 million while like for like sales increased 13.7 per cent.

Following the success of last year’s hit toy lines including The LEGO Movie, Loom Bands and Frozen products, the firm has increased its planned store expansion from 15 to 18 outlets.

Founder and managing director, Gary Grant has said that expansion for the following year will depend on how it trades this Christmas, a period he expects to be boosted by Star Wars toys.

The Entertainer’s ambitious expansion plans arrive as the company aims to fill the gap left by the closure of Woolworths in 2009.

Grant continued: “There are many communities that don’t have a toy retailer – when Woolworths closed its doors, 800 toy departments closed theirs.

“We do not even have a seventh of the store estate of Woolworths currently.”

The Entertainer currently has 107 stores in the UK.
