Loom band charms are being removed from sale across the country after fears emerged that some may contain dangerous levels of cancer causing chemicals.

The Entertainer has already removed the loom band charms from its stores nationwide, when they were discovered to contain high levels of the substance phthalate.

One PVC charm to have been tested contained 40 per cent of the banned chemical. EU law states that 0.1 per cent is the legal limit.

The packets tested had foreign writing on them and the CE stamp indicating they were within European safety law, reports the Telegraph.

“It was brought to our attention today that Loom charms purchased from one of our stores may contain phthalates,” said a spokesperson from The Entertainer.

“At The Entertainer, children’s safety is our number one priority, so as a precautionary measure, we have removed all loom charms from sale with immediate effect, whilst we conduct a full investigation.”

Wholesaler, RMS International insists that it is only the PVC loom charms that have come under scrutiny.

“We would like to reassure the public that loom bands are entirely safe and this only involves a number of PVC loom charms,” read a statement from RMS.

“Any concerned consumers should return their product to the retailer from where they were purchased.”
