Penguin fever seems destined to take over this season as new reports suggest John Lewis’ plush penguin mascots are being sold for as much as £499 on eBay.

Monty and Mabel stole the hearts of the nation when John Lewis aired its Christmas advert featuring CGI penguins last week.

Their cuddly toy counterparts soon sold out at John Lewis’ online store, despite their hefty price tags of £95 each.

Not content with melting hearts, the pair now seem to be melting brains too as eBay sellers ride the wave of penguin popularity with sales of the plush toys reaching as much as £499.

However, reports that while eBay sellers clearly see the business opportunity this season, it is still possible to get a cuddly penguin for the original price tag.

A John Lewis spokesman has said that more stock will be available online soon and the Monty and Mabel range is still available in stores.

Parents and wallets around the UK must have just let out a huge sigh of relief.
