The store's 'must have' list features the usual high ticket, headline-generating item. This year it is a £10,000 Audi pedal car, based on a 1936 racing car and limited to only 999 pieces.

Among the more affordable options are WowWee's Paper Jamz, Buzz Lightyear Jet Pack and Go Go My Wakin' Pup.

Lynne Crooke, Selfridges’ toy shop buyer said: "Boys toys have become the preserve of gadget obsessed grown men. We're going to bring toys back to the boys with goodies like this brilliant Audi pedal car which chaps of all ages will love. But the best thing about it is that as much as daddy will want to have a go, he simply won't fit."

Crooke continued: "With this, and all the other fantastic toys in the shop, it's time for toddlers to reclaim playtime."
