Sainsbury's enjoys 'record breaking Christmas'

The grocer's sales went up 3.9 per cent in the third quarter.

The week before Christmas was Sainsbury's strongest seven days of trading ever. The UK's number-three grocer served a record number of customers, with transactions exceeding 27 million.

The supermarket also enjoyed its best Christmas Eve as it raked in over £100 million in sales.

Non-food continued to perform well, growing at a faster rate than Sainsbury's food offering.

Online, sales grew an impressive 15 per cent as Sainsbury's delivered a record 200,000 food orders.

In the quarter Sainsbury's added 496,000 square-feet of floorspace.
