NPD: Toys spring into life

April retail sales were up 4.6 per cent on a like-for-like basis, according to the British Retail Consortium.

This was due to Easter falling in April this year compared to March in 2008, as well as warmer sunny weather this April, while last year it was cold and wet.

This uplift was consistent across both food and non-food with outdoor leisre, clothing adn footwear particularly showing strong growth. Non-food internet, mail-order and phone sales grew by 12.5 per cent and continue to find favour with consumers.

Summer sales increase

UK Retail sales rose 1.8 per cent in value on a like-for-like basis in July 2009 and up 2.6 per cent on a total basis according to the British Retail Consortium.
