Alan Parker will take over the role of non-executive chairman of Mothercare from August 15th.
Ben Gordon, chief executive of Mothercare, said:"He brings with him extensive international experience in franchising and in building consumer facing brands. Alan's expertise and guidance will be invaluable as we continue on the next phase of Mothercare's development."
Parker arrives from Whitbread, where he helped develop the Costa brand worldwide, and worked as a managing director for Holiday Inn in EMEA prior to that.
Last quarter Mothercare, owner of the Early Learning Centre, saw its international sales grow by 15 per cent while domestic revenues were down 4.3 per cent.
In his first statement as chairman Parker said the company was "poised for future global expansion."
He added: "I am delighted to be joining the Board and I look forward to working with the management team to realign the UK business and grow our brands internationally."
The departing Ian Peacock said: "After nine years on the board, and with Mothercare in its 50th anniversary year, I feel the time is right to move on and hand over to a new chairman who will help steer Mothercare through its next phase.
"I am very pleased that Alan will be taking on the role and wish him, the Board and the management team every success."
