Mothercare boosts sales

Group sales in the fourth quarter increased almost 32 per cent, in the 11 weeks to March 29th, an improvement of nearly four per cent on a comparable basis.

Likewise, full year sales rose some 35 per cent, up by 4.5 per cent on a comparable basis.

Internationally, 77 franchise stores have opened over the year, taking the total number to 494. International sales for the full year were up 30 per cent, an increase of almost 15 per cent on a comparable basis.

The retailer will reveal all in its preliminary results, out May 22nd, however, it said solid performances from UK stores and Direct in Home have played a major role in its overall boost.

“This is another strong performance for the recently enlarged Mothercare, group, which is benefiting from our strategy of developing Mothercare as the world’s leading specialist parenting brand,” Ben Gordon, chief executive, said.

“The multi-channel UK business has performed well, particularly Direct in Home, and the integration of the Early Learning Centre is on track. International continues its strong momentum, further strengthened by the addition of the Early Learning Centre brand, with a total of 494 franchise stores operating today in 48 countries.”
