Merrythought, Britain's only remaining teddy bear factory, is taking on the US as part of an exclusive deal to take the inspiration behind AA Milne's Winnie the Pooh stateside.

The firm has secured an exclusive deal by Fox Productions to recreate Christopher Robin's childhood teddy, Edward Bear - the inspiration behind Winnie the Pooh - as it is seen in the hit film, Goodbye Christopher Robin.

Under the deal, a palm-sized version of the bear that has ben on sale at Merrythought, Harrods and other UK retailers, has nw made the trip to the US where it is retailing exclusively at the independent retailer, The Toy Shoppe.

Since the release of the film Goodbye Christopher Robin in 2017, Edward Bear has since won over a new generation of fans. Mini Edward was recently launched at the Richmond store, where the great-granddaughter of Merrythought founder WG Holmes was on hand for a signing event.

Holmes said that she and all her staff were very proud of Merrythought’s commitment to keeping the traditional English teddy bear alive for future generations, both here in the UK and across the world.

The firm’s teddy bears are still handmade by a skilled team at the original factory in Ironbridge, Shropshire. Merrythought celebrates its 90th anniversary next year and is currently working on its newest collection of cuddly companions.

“We feel extremely honoured to have been asked to recreate a replica of this very special teddy bear and delighted to see just how popular he still is," said Holmes.

"I am sure that has a lot to do with how the story of Winnie the Pooh captures the importance of a teddy bear to a child, and how it becomes a friend for life.

“The idea behind this new petite version is that it is small enough to carry with you anywhere, allowing the bear to share your life experiences and be a companion that’s always at your side; just like Christopher Robin’s original Edward Bear."
