The retailer has reported that sales for the week ending December 12th have outperformed the previous week's record by seven per cent.

Every store exceeded its sales from the same week in 2008 last, with a number of records broken. 21 outlets showed double-digit growth.

John Lewis Direct sales continued to be strong, with all categories up on last year. Traffic to the site reached an all-time high, and a focus on gift purchases was apparent.

Sales of toys and crafts continued to break records, with Gruffalo merchandise a best seller.

Jill Little, merchandise director for John Lewis commented: "With less than a week to go to Christmas, all partners will be working hard to make the most of opportunities and provide excellent service.

"I'm delighted with trade this Christmas and very optimistic for an equally successful clearance."
