Online giant Amazon could be planning to open up to 400 physical stores in the US, a shopping centre operator has revealed.

The move was detailed during a conference call to analysts by Sandeep Mathrani, chief executive of US mall chain General Growth Properties Inc.

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, during the call Mathrani said: “You’ve got Amazon opening brick and mortar bookstores and their goal is to open, as I understand, 300 to 400 bookstores.”

Amazon has so far declined to comment on the hint of a major move to physical stores, saying it does not comment on ‘rumours and speculation’.

Amazon made its first move to bricks and mortar retail when it opened Amazon Books in Seattle’s University Village in November last year. The 5,500 sq ft store houses around 5,000 titles at the same price as its website.

The Bookseller reports that at the tome of opening, vice president of Amazon Books, Jennifer Cast, said that she ‘hoped’ the outlet wouldn’t be the company’s only store.
