Hamleys had originally planned to initiate its India campaign in two years time. Now the roll-out will commence this year, adding 20 shops over the next five years, rather than seven.

If Hamleys fulfils its Indian ambition, it could end up have more stores there than it currently does altogether. Excluding its premises in Mumbai and Chenai, Hamleys operates 14 stores worldwide.

Sudhir Pai, Hamleys' partner in India, told The Times: "All of our stores put together could end up being bigger than that of the franchisee."

He added: "We want to expand much faster than what was in our contractual agreement because the response has been so encouraging."

The news follows yesterdays estimates that the Indian toy industry was worth £225 million last financial year.
