Halloween is expected to reap up to £460m at UK retail this year, becoming the third biggest event of the retail calendar.

According to data provided by This Is Money, the craze that originated in the US is expected to make its biggest sweep across Britain yet, as supermarkets dedicate more space to Halloween items.

With the ghoulish evening falling on Saturday this year, coinciding with the rugby World Cup final, many retail experts believe 2015 will see a huge boom in the amount spent on costumes, sweets and pumpkins.

In the US, Halloween totals between $7 and $8 billion each year for shops, and while UK retail estimates to make only a fraction of this, Halloween sales are expected to jump 3000 per cent on the £12million taken back in 2001.

Mintel data estimates that £240million was spent on Halloween in the UK last year, but Tesco expects to see this rise to £400 million this year, based on its sales forecasts and market share.

Meanwhile, Asda told This Is Money that Halloween is ‘no longer confined to one aisle of seasonal products.’

“In line with other large seasonal events such as Christmas and Easter, Halloween products are making their way into all areas of the store, including pet, bakery and alcohol aisles,” said the retailer.

A Tesco spokesperson, added: “Halloween has grown significantly in the last ten years with the whole family, form young trick or treaters through to teenagers and adults, helping to turn it into the second biggest party of the year, after New Year’s Eve.”

Tesco now expects to shift 200,000 glow in the dark fangs, 170,000 tubes of fake blood and 170,000 witch hats.
