Brighton’s independent toy store, Whirligig has been named the Good Toy Guide’s February Retailer of the Month.

Founded in Brighton in 2012 and specialising in ‘things to make and do’, the store has been championed by the team for its engaging and creative range of toys and games.

Over its three-year history, store owner Peter Allinson – originally a primary school teacher – has worked closely with small toy producers, filling the store with construction toys, sewing kits, origami, model making and painting sets.

“Many of the gifts in the shop are aimed at older children as we felt that the five to 15 year old age groups were under represented in many toy shops, but that this is the age where they have the most potential for creativity,” said Allinson.

“We are different by design. We can’t stand toys that children can take out of the box and then throw away – get them making and thinking – they will have far more fun and remember the experience for ever.

“We are delighted to have been recognised for our retail contribution. It makes a real difference to us as an independent trying to do something a bit different.”

Whirligig has recently opened a second in store in Chicester, West Sussex and now has plans for further expansion in the next few years.

“We love the products that Whirligig in Brighton sells,” said Dr. Amanda Gummer, founder of the Good toy Guide.

“Creativity is such an important part of a child’s development and it helps to strengthen their imagination and self expression. It is lovely to find a shop selling toys that enable children to grow in a practical yet creative way.

“This shop is definitely worth a visit.”
