1,000 Argos distribution centre workers are going on strike tomorrow over changes to their contracts.

Members of the Unite union voted to strike at four centres for 24 hours due to changes Argos is making, requiring them to work more flexible hours.

The retailer has said it is making the changes as it adapts its business for customers’ shopping habits, and does not expect the strike to affect customers, having contingency plans in place to ensure ‘normal service.’

Retail Week reports that the strike is being held despite only two members of staff out of the 1,219 not accepting the new contracts.

Unite said the changes to contracts will mean increased weekend working, which will adversely impact the workers’ family lives.

Argos has offered those moving to a new contract a transition payment of £2,000 and the same rate of pay.

“Argos has a five-year transformation plan to become a digital retail leader, which involves matching our digital and in-store services to customers’ shopping preferences,” said an Argos spokesperson.

“Distribution colleagues are key to the success of this plan, and we are proposing 350 new permanent distribution jobs as part of this process.”
