Amazon says this Christmas shopping period is going to be its greatest yet, despite concerns about the state of the economy in the US.

Tom Szkutak, chief financial officer for Amazon said the firm anticipates a record season from strong sales, particularly in the toys category.

"We're very pleased with what we are seeing in our toys business. We are continuing to improve the selection in that category,” he said.

Amazon posted earnings of $80 million for its Q3 compared with $19 million for the same period in 2006. Its revenue reached $3.26 billion compared with $2.31 billion last year.

"If you look at our Q3 results, we had a great focus on customer prices, improving selection and making sure delivery was fast. The combination of that drove our Q3 results. You should expect to see even more of that in Q4," Szkutak also said.
