Educational app and children's toy developer Stui has launched a Kickstarter campaign for Wonderblox, a play set that uses a digital app and a set of traditional wooden blocks.

Wonderblox is an app and a set of wooden blocks that uses an iPad screen as the play area.

It comes with a play set that has an embedded mirror to direct the iPad's front-facing camera to the play area, allowing children to position the blocks on the iPad screen to spell out words.

Wonderblox detects and locates the play pieces in real-time and the app's spelling and letter recognition mechanism allows children have 'both an enjoyable and educational experience'.

The product can differentiate colours and recognise patterns, geometric shapes and letters from every existing language and the games available include spelling game Once Upon a Woods, matching game Icy Penguins and stacking game Cool Frog.

A statement on the Kickstarter campaign page reads: 'Kids today are growing up different. Mind-blowing technologies are accessible from birth: computers, consoles, smartphones and tablets. These technologies and products open up amazing possibilities, yet they take up more and more of children’s playtime. Looking back at when we grew up, cars, dolls, action figures, board games, Lego’s and such were our playground.

'This sparked an idea. If we find a right way to combine digital experiences with real physical toys, we might create an experience that's totally new and has the best of both worlds. This is how Stui was born.'

The Wonderblox Kickstarter campaign aims to raise $50,000 by July 30th.
