A boardgame based on the journalism of old New York City, has smashed its Kickstarter goal by 1,692 per cent.

Penny Press, the game that puts players in the role of a newspaper baron assigning stories and battling to hit deadlines, has achieved $33,846 in crowd-sourced funding.

The tabletop game features actual news stories and pictures hitting the headlines at the turn of the 20th Century.

The game embarked on its Kickstarter mission with the modest goal of $2,000, with the simple aim of printing a small run of the game.

The team behind the game reports that the success the project has found on the site will now allow them to add a multitude of stretch goals to the game, including linen cards, press passes and a comic page featuring a selection of comics drawn by ‘artists friends and associates.’

Last year, Penny Press was picked by Cards Against Humanity to take part in its Table Top Deathmatch, a board game design competition.

The firm won the competition on July 10th 2013, when it received financial backing to help print its concept.
