A campaign to bring video game franchise Dark Souls to the board game arena has smashed its Kickstarter goal within minutes of going live.

The title, adapted to tabletop format by Steamforged Games, hit its target of £50,000 within three minutes of going live on the crowd-funding site last week.

In a matter of days, the game – billed as the ‘toughest board game you will play’ – has gone on to secure £492,699, almost ten times its original goal.

Dark Souls – The Board Game is described as a strategically challenging, deeply immersive combat exploration game for one to four players, all set in the Dark Souls universe.

Players can choose from a number of core character classes and explore dangerous locations full of monsters, treasures and of course, the video games’ infamously impossible deadly boss fights.

The team at Seamforged Games designed Dark Souls – The Board Game specifically for the Dark Souls universe and through the title introduces a number of innovative gameplay mechanics to ‘deliver an experience that captures the very essence of the original video games.’

“Dark Souls – The Board Game is much more than a classic dungeon crawler,” said the team via its Kickstarter page.

“Just like the Dark Souls video games, this is a game that requires strategic thinking, clever planning and exemplary execution to succeed.”
