Mattel has appointed former Maker Studios’ chief executive, Ynon Kreiz to chair its board of directors as it takes new steps to shore up sliding sales in a rocky retail environment.

Kreiz was formerly chief executive and chairman at Maker Studios, a digital short form video company that Walt Disney bought in 2014.

He has also led Endemol Group, an independent TV production company and serves on the board of directors at Warner Music Group.

Having joined Mattel’s board in June 2017, Kreiz will succeed Christopher Sinclair, a former Mattel chief executive who announced last year that he would retire as chairman when his term ended.

“Mattel is an iconic global company with beloved brands and a unique ability to connect with consumers of all ages,” said Kreiz.

“As we work to build on these strengths and position Mattel for growth, we are laser-focused on ensuring the Company reaches its full potential in a dynamic and rapidly evolving marketplace.”

The company last year picked Google’s Margo Georgiadis to replace Sinclair, who was named interim chief executive and chairman in 2015 after its former chief Bryan Stockton resigned.

Mattel has been grappling with challenging retail trends including the bankruptcy of Toys R Us, and recently rebuffed approaches from rival toymaker Hasbro.
