Electronic and educational toy specialist VTech is the latest victim of online hackers, with a database of nearly 500,000 British families and children obtained.

The toy giant revealed last night that a database of names and addresses holding up to five million accounts worldwide had been breached in a cyber-attack on the firm’s website.

The database itself, called Learning Lodge is a customer app that acts as a gateway to download games, e-books and other content to their VTech devices.

Following the attack, a large amount of data obtained from the Learning Lodge was discovered online, however according to experts has since been hidden. According to the BBC, data posted included a ‘considerable number of children’s names, dates of birth and gender.’

VTech has issued a statement to customers that read: “Upon discovering the unauthorised access, we immediately conducted a thorough investigation, which involved a comprehensive check of the affected site and implantation of measures to defend against further attacks.”

The company stressed that it was “important to note that our customer database does not contain any credit card or banking information.”

However, the firm has admitted that data does include “general user profile information such as name, email address, encrypted password, secret question and answer for password retrieval, IP address, mailing address and download history.”
