The winners of the 2016 Toy of the Year Awards have been revealed, with Doc McStuffins and Star Wars proving popular properties.
The 16th annual Awards ceremony, held during the North American International Toy Fair, saw the Doc McStuffins Pet Vet Checkup Centre from Just Play named as the best toy of the year.
The play-set also fought off competition from the likes of Tomy’s Miles from Tomorrowland Stellosphere and Razor’s Razor Jr. Lil’ Crazy to scoop the win in the Preschool Toy of the Year category.
Disney’s Star Wars surged to victory across the Boys Toy of the Year category, celebrating the LEGO Star Wars: The Force Awakens Millenium Falcon as well as in the Property of the Year category, fending off the likes of Paw Patrol, Jurassic World and Minions.
Meanwhile, Spin Master saw victory in the Activity Toy of the Year category for its Bunchems line, pitting Roominate’s Amusement Park and Blip toys’ Yummy Nummies to the post for the win.
Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition reigned champion in the E-connected Toy of the Year line-up, narrowly beating the likes of Mattel’s Hello Barbie and the Viewmaster reboot as well as VTech’s Kidizoom Action Cam and Zing’s Stickbot Studio.
It was Hexbug’s VEX Robotics Robotic Arm that emerged victorious in the Educational Toy of the Year line-up, while Hasbro’s smash hit, Pie Face beat LEGO Dimensions to be named Game of the Year.
The Girls Toy of the Year category paid credence to the popularity of Moose Toys’ Shopkins, handing first prize to the Shopkins Scoops Ice Cream Truck, ahead of Disney’s Frozen Sing-A-Long Elsa from Jakks Pacific.
Fisher-Price’s Bright Beats Dance & Move BeatBo secured a win in the Toddler Toy of the Year category, while Spin Master’s Meccanoid G15 took home the trophy in the Innovative Toy of the Year line-up.
Learning Resources’ Trumble Trax Magnetic Marble Run took gold in the Specialty Toy of the Year category, fending off competition from The Haywire Group’s Worry Eaters and Gund’s Nursery Time Elmo.
The Outdoor Toy of the Year line-up saw the Razor GFD Fury from Razor USA take the win, while the People’s Choice Awards was handed this year to KidKraft’s Uptown Espresso Kitchen.
Hosted by the US Toy Industry Association in support of the Toy Industry Foundation, the awards were held at the American Museum of Natural History, serving as the official kick-off to the 113th North American International Toy Fair.
