Tomy unveils Big Works packaging design competition winner

Tomy has revealed the winner of its packaging design competition for the new Big Works range.

The toy firm challenged design students of Nottingham Trent University to develop innovative new packaging concepts for its new range of 1:16 scale toys based on vehicles seen around the city.

The six week challenge saw 70 second year students compete to take the coveted first place, with the reward of seeing their design put in to practice.

The first place acolade was scooped by 20 year old Lukasz Bialkowski, who will now see his pull out road design - encouraging kids to play with the packaging as well as the toy - put into production.

In addition, Bialkowski was treated to a VIP day tomy's headquarters near London, where he was joined by competition runners up, Kimberley Ambrose, 19 and Brandon Evans, 21.

‘I’m very excited and I can’t quite believe it," said Bialkowski.

"I really liked the brief and the fact that it was a live project.

"Putting what I’ve learnt over the last two years into practice, taking on board not only a young audience but a European one, whilst ensuring that the packaging was something that children could also play with, not just throw away, was a real challenge. 

"It’s been a great opportunity and will certainly prepare me for the future.’’

Emilia Lawes, senior sales and marketing manager across Tomy's Farm ranges, added: “We’ve been overwhelmed with the level of creativity shown by all the students. 

"Lukasz’s designs really stood out, especially the concept of a pull out road design incorporated into the box. This, combined with the yellow hazard warning style tape around the box, really added play value and will certainly give it shelf appeal.

“We’re confident that Lukasz’s designs will complement and add real play value to the new Big Works range.

"As a toy brand, it is essential that we remain at the forefront of design and by linking with Nottingham Trent University, we can ensure we continue to be innovative, as well as helping to launch the careers of the next generation of designers.”

The new Big Works range, featuring city themed toys in 1:16 scale, will be available from June 2014.
