Mattel is launching a Barbie doll of Ava DuVernay, the director of Selma and the first African-American woman to direct a movie nominated for a Best Picture Oscar.

The doll forms part of Mattel's Sheroes line in the US, which was originally planned to be one-off dolls that their real-life counterparts could auction off for charity.

However, due to popular demand, the toy firm is launching an actual run of the Ava DuVernay Barbie dolls.

“People have really been kind talking about why they are embracing this doll, but it’s certainly not about me. It’s about the image," DuVernay told Buzzfeed.

"It’s about balance. It’s about the full spectrum of who we are. It’s not enough even to have one black Barbie, because black women are not a monolith. We have all different kinds of hair, all different kinds of occupations, all different kinds of passions, so I think what folks might be responding to is the variance.”

Proceeds from the doll will go to Color of Change and WITNESS.
