Online campaign leads to Barbie and Ken reunion

Mattel uses social media campaign to begin the celebrations for Ken's 50th anniversary.

Mattel asked Facebook users to vote last week, on whether the two dolls' 'romance' should be rekindled and this morning, Barbie's status on the site was updated to 'in a relationship.'

Ken's status says that getting back with Barbie is 'the best Valentine's gift I could possibly ask for.'

The marketing campaign marks Ken's 50th anniversary this year and incorporates billboard advertising in the US, along with a dedicated website

The dolls' Facebook sites have been updated regularly with news of Ken's efforts to win Barbie back.

"Barbie and Ken have an epic love story that has stood the test of time," said Stephanie Cota, senior vice president of global marketing, girls' brands.

"As the ultimate boyfriend for every occasion, Ken knew just what to do to win Barbie back - the iconic couple were truly made for each other and this is just the beginning of their next chapter together."
