A new National Scrabble Champion has been crowned, with Paul Allan - a teacher from Rushden in Northamptonshire - taking the honours.

Allan (pictured) clinched the title of National Scrabble Champion 2013 after competing against 57 Scrabble professionals in 14 games at the semi final back in September.

He was declared the winner on Sunday, November 3rd after a best in five showdown which saw him accumulate an overall score of 503 in the last match, eclipsing his opponent's 389. He also won £2,500 in cash.

The 42nd National Scrabble Championship secured widespread coverage across broadcast, national and regional titles with highlights including BBC Breakfast, Sky News, local ITV channels, BBC Radio 4 and a number of national newspapers in print and online.

The Scrabble Champions Tournament is due to debut in Prague from December 3rd to 8th. Formerly known as the World Scrabble Championships, the new annual tournament will be part of the wider Mind Sports Festival.
