Moose Toys owner Manny Stul has become the first Australian to win the coveted Ernst and Young World Entrepreneur of the Year title.

Stul scooped the accolade in Monaco this weekend where he outpaced 55 other contestants and championed the family-owned toy firm for its efforts in the collectables market with its hit line Shopkins.

Last year, Moose Enterprise turned over $600 million, having carved out the latest in girls’ collectable toy crazes with its range of Shopkins products.

The 67-year-old Stul was praised for his efforts in ‘nurturing the business to sustained global success.’

“His mettle was tested when Moose faced a product recall that would have overcome less resilient and well managed businesses,” said chair of the judging panel, Rebecca MacDonald.

In 2007 it was discovered that a craft bead produced by Moose had to be recalled because it was found to contain a chemical that turns into a party drug GHB in the human body.

Having guided the firm through the set back, Stul has credited ‘constant innovation’ for its success over his 16 year tenure at the helm of Moose Toys.

“You need to be up to date,” he said. “If we know someone is doing X, it doesn’t matter what it is, we won’t go after them. We will do our own thing.

“Be innovative, creative and keep away from the rest of it. It has been the strength of the company.”
