Mattel has created a scale replica of the hoverboard prop from Back to the Future 2 – but it seems we'll have to wait until 2015* for the hovering technology itself.

The board is available to purchase for $130 on MattyCollector now.

Although it does not actually hover, it does glide over most level surfaces and has sounds sampled from the films.

MattyCollector said: "Our Hoverboard is based on the best features of the more than 30 slight variations of Hoverboard props used in the classic film series, and includes authentic "whooshing" sounds sampled directly from the films and a deco featuring Mattel logos just like in the films.

"Be assured your Hoverboard will gently glide over most level surfaces (it will not, however, work on water)."

Like the re-designed Castle Grayskull offered by MattyCollector, production of the Hoverboard was secured by asking fans to pre-order the product.

An actual working hoverboard might not be too far away. This concept - designed to look like Mattel's hoverboard - utilises magnets to levitate.

*The year in which Back to the Future 2 was set... (assuming you didn't know that already)
