Up to 100 extra people have been hired to monitor vendor plants in China, Mattel’s head of quality, Jim Walter, said.
Speaking at a recent conference, Walter said it’s important for global manufacturing operations to have a direct involvement with their vendors on a daily basis.
He said the firm’s officials are checking and documenting materials and manufacturing processes along with production runs.
“We have much greater control on sub-contracting. We must visit, and we must train every single subcontractor prior to use.
“[Last year’s recalls] emphasised to me, the fact that you cannot be 99 per cent accurate here. You cannot be 99.9 per cent accurate here. You have to be 100 per cent accurate, 100 per cent sure. And that requires a level of vigilance that, frankly, us and a number of people in our industry and other industries, were not exerting at the time,” he said.
