For the first time, John Adams is sponsoring the annual World Othello Championship, taking place at the University of Cambridge.

Taking place from October 28th untill October 31st, finalists from 20 countries who have already secured their place as the top players in their country’s Othello championship will come together to battle it out.

Lynette Norris, marketing manager at John Adams, said: “This is the first time we have sponsored the World Othello Championship and we’re very excited for such a prestigious tournament to be held in the UK, particularly in such a beautiful city as Cambridge which is so rich in history.

“Othello is such an iconic strategic board game which has been played and loved by generations so we’re really looking forward to seeing who is crowned the World Champion.”

The first World Othello championship was held in Tokyo in 1977, which has since turned into an annual event. This year marks the 39th championship since the competition began.

Guy Plowman, director of the World Othello Championship Tournament, said: “The World Championships is the calendar event of the year.

“This year, over 60 of the best players from around the world will be heading to Cambridge, which is a city that holds such a strong Othello heritage.

“The tournament is a chance to see the best players from around the world lock horns over a board. There are always shocks and surprises but the best people tend to rise to the top and there is always a real buzz for the final.”
