Judging criteria required winners to demonstrate outstanding design coupled with commercial success. As the winners were announced, judges commented that ‘Barbie Shanghai was hands-down the best new store to open this year.'
House of Barbie, Shanghai was designed by New York-based architectural firm Slade Architecture. The store covers approximately 40,000 square feet on six floors.
The store houses the world’s largest collection of Barbie dolls and lifestyle products as well as experiential, activity driven attractions including a Barbie design centre, fashion stage, café and spa.
Senior vice president and general manager of the Barbie brand, Richard Dickson said: “This is a legendary moment in the brand’s history.
"By capturing the essence of the Brand in a four-wall experience, we have created a fully-realised expression of a new, broader vision for the brand centering on fashion and aspiration for girls.”
Slade Architecture principal Hayes Slade commented: “We are delighted to have received this award and to have been involved in such an exciting development for the Barbie brand.
"The design that we have created is a sleek, fun, unapologetically feminine interpretation that pays homage to Barbie, past, present, and future.”
