It looks like He-Man could be set for a return from the wilderness in the near future.

Deadline has an exclusive with Hollywood director John Chu, who says he is in initial talks with Sony Pictures to make a new live-action adaptation of Masters of the Universe. The director's credits include Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never and Hasbro’s forthcoming GI Joe sequel, GI Joe: Retaliation.

With Hasbro clawing in millions upon billions from its big-screen toy brand adaptations, the time seems right for Mattel to get in on the action. He-Man was created by the toy giant in the late '80s, supposedly as an answer to the Star Wars action figure craze.

The toy line and its animated series' achieved great success around the time, but despite not being in the mainstream for a while, He-Man has still retained its iconic status, and Mattel continues to produce He-Man action figures for the collectors market (see them on Matty Collector).

A Masters of the Universe remake has been on the cards for a while, with several Hollywood studios displaying a desire to exorcise the demons of the 1987 Masters of the Universe flop starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man (trailer below).
