Hasbro’s popular 80s action figure toy line M.A.S.K. is being revived for a whole new audience of today’s comic book fans.
Comic book specialists IDW Publishing is planning a new series that will ‘capture the essence of the original toy line’ but bring it to a new audience with ‘modern sensibilities.’
Launching this November, the M.A.S.K. comic series will be the third of Hasbro’s classic properties to find a new lease of life in published form, following the likes of Micronauts and ROM.
News of the reboot also follows word that Hasbro is creating its own cinematic universe led by G.I. Joe that will see the action hero and his crew team with other Hasbro properties such as ROM: Space Knight, The Micronauts and M.A.S.K.
It has been speculated that the move into publishing for these classic properties is therefore seen as Hasbro’s attempt to reacquaint audiences with the big name brands of yesteryear ahead of the movie releases.
“We are so proud to be able to continue growing the impressive relationship between IDW Publishing and Hasbro with the new M.A.S.K. comic series,” said IDW managing editor, David Hedgecock.
“We can’t wait to bring the high-octane, unique, brand of storytelling to this book that we know fans of M.A.S.K. will expect.”
Michael Kelly, head of global publishing as Hasbro, added: “We’ve had tremendous success with IDW over the years in re-launching classic brands for a contemporary audience, while still paying appropriate homage to their origins.
“We are thrilled to welcome a new team to this library of heroes, as M.A.S.K. joins the ranks of Jem & The Holograms, Micronauts and The Transformers.”
