Financial markets were rife with speculation that the firm had re-opened talks with private equity firm Providence Equity Partners regarding a $6bn leveraged buy-out, which would take the firm private.

Hasbro moved to dispel the takeover talk, saying it is: "Not having any discussions regarding the sale of the company. Hasbro confirmed that it had been approached by a private equity firm regarding a transaction, and said that its board of directors determined that there was no interest in pursuing such transaction."
