Tech toys are taking over the retail shelves, and Hamleys predicts them to be filling stockings too, as the London store reveals its Top Ten Toys for Christmas 2014.

And leading the way this year is the WiFi connected doll, designed to help kids with their homework, My Friend Cayla from Vivid.

The doll can be synced with an Android or iOS device via Bluetooth or use speech to text technology to look up answers online and speak them back.

And to put parents’ minds at ease, the doll – priced at £74 - has a pre-defined list of ‘bad words’ and topics, which she will not talk about.

Joining the tech toy titans being championed by the toyshop this season is VTech’s Kidizoom Smart Watch (£50) with the ability to take photos, record videos and allow kids to play games.

Following, is the new Teksta T-Rex from Character Options. Boasting the movement of the original Teksta puppies that made last year’s list, along side a host of new dinosaur features, Teksta T-Rex retails for £75.

LeapFrog’s LeapTV also makes the list this season with its educational, active video gaming system.

LeapTV will hit shelves from October and will sell for £135.

Also featuring in the Christmas Hit List this year is Doh Vinci Style and Store Vanity, retailing at £25; Transformers Chomp and Stomp Grimlock – a 20 inch robot that changes with one step in to a rampaging dinosaur; Boom Co Rapid Madness, a blaster that can fire 20 darts in a matter of seconds and fires up to 50 feet; and Barbie Colour Change Bag featuring colour change technology that allows it to match over 100 different shades.

Of course, Christmas wouldn’t be complete without a mention of Disney’s Frozen. Hamleys predicts that the new collection of Frozen: Ice Skating Dolls will be a big hit this year, featuring Elsa and Ana in ice skating form and retailing at £40 each.

Flair’s interactive monster Xeno completes the list, presenting a range of emotions and movements through its animated LCD eyes with over 40 expressions.

“There is a lot of tech toys in our list this year,” Hamleys toy buyer, Natalie Rogerson, told ToyNews. “But it’s all great stuff. Investment in research and development [of tech toys] has really paid off, because this is the best collection I have seen in many, many years.

“And they are truly innovative toys. I think the toy industry has worked out how to play with technology and still keep the essence of a good play type.”

And Hamleys hasn’t forgotten its roots in the more traditional toys, with a collection of more classic and wooden lines ranking highly in its Recommended Toys for Christmas.

The line up includes the likes of the Fisher-Price My First Thomas and Friends Motion Control Thomas, Personalised Necklaces, Hamleys’ own Traditional wooden range, Palace Pets plush, Turtles action figures and more.

Hamleys recognises children still want to play with traditional toys with its own range of wooden toys.

“Traditional toys are still a very big deal for Hamleys to recognise traditional and nostalgic play,” continued Rogerson. “These are still things kids enjoy, so we have got a lot of wooden products and a huge amount of our sales comes from Teddy Bears still, throughout the year.”
