Last week Walmart highlighted what it believes will be its top selling toys of 2012 - and Furby has come out on top.

The retailer divided the 20 into three categories: one for boys toys, one for girls and ‘Best Toys for All Kids’.

As well as the Christmas list, Walmart launched a layaway service allowing parents to reserve toys and then pay for them as and when they can. Toys R Us has also announced a ‘Hot Toy Reservation’ service.

"As the largest seller of toys in the US, we know what parents are looking for. Whether bikes, dolls or action figures, we're committed to having the toys kids want on our shelves at prices their parents can afford all season long," said Anne Marie Kehoe, vice president of toys, Walmart US.

She added: "We carefully crafted our Top 20 Toys List to provide the right assortment for all kids. Making the list available now gives parents the chance to get toys early and take advantage of layaway with no gimmicks."

Walmart is also matching competitor pricing during checkout.
