Disney has lifted the lid on a new video game/toy crossover that is set to challenge Skylanders.
Disney Infinity is a video game that brings together characters from a mix of Disney/Pixar IP, including Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean, Lightning McQueen from Cars and many more.
By placing a collectable toy figurine on the Disney Infinity Base accessory, which connects to a games console or mobile device, users will unlock playable characters and areas in the video game.
Disney Infinity launches in June on all consoles and it will arrive on mobile and online throughout 2013.
A countdown timer has appeared on the Disney Infinity website, which means the game and toys should be out on June 1st, 2013.
The site also states that Toys R Us, Argos, Amazon.co.uk and GAME will be stocking Disney Infinity in the UK.
A range of 40 collectible interactive pieces, 17 figures and Power Discs will be released initially, which allow players to 'expand and customise their play experiences'.
Characters can be brought together to play in a virtual 'Toy Box'.
“Disney Infinity introduces a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future," said John Pleasants, co-president, Disney Interactive.
“With this innovative approach to gaming, Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”
John Blackburn, vice president and general manager, Avalanche Software, added: “Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life.
“With our platform’s unique gameplay mechanics and innovative approach to user generated content within the 'Toy Box' mode, Disney Infinity will spark imaginations and provide endless hours of fun and creativity.”
Skylanders recently hit $500 million in US retail sales just one year after hitting shelves.
