Warner Bros. has secured the rights for a big screen adaptation of the popular board game title Monsterpocalypse.

Following what has been described as a ‘heated bidding war’, the adaptation of the cult board game has been attached to the director of the Evil Dead remake, Fede Alvarez.

DreamWorks and Sony were among the studios said to be vying for the project before Warner Bros trounced with a reported seven figure sum for the rights and writing alone.

Created by game designer Matt Wilson, Monsterpocalypse pits humans in robot suits against monsters. An adaptation was previously attempted in 2010 with Tim Burton tapped to direct, however was halted when Guillermo del Toro launched a competing title Pacific Rim.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Alvarez will write the screenplay with his writing partner Rodo Sayagues.
