In 2011, the girls sector accounted for £1.3 billion, with key growth areas including play-set themed dolls, plush and building sets. And, with a raft of new offerings arriving to bolster the wealth of existing product, 2012 is being predicted to be another bumper year. We preview what’s coming up…

From Barbie, to Monster High and Fijit Friends, Mattel’s girls brands will continue to grow throughout 2012.

For Barbie a 360-degree communications programme with the tagline: ‘Wow, see what happens when you play with Barbie’ – will be realised through a full-year TV and cinema campaign, experiential marketing and product launches including the Barbie Photo Fashion Doll and Barbie Ultimate Closet, an extendable wardrobe filled with fashions.There will also be a number of entertainment launches with The Princess & The Pop Star in cinemas and on DVD, while digital series, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse launches on 

An on-pack partnership with Royal Caribbean Cruises supports Barbie Family products, including Barbie Sisters Cruise Ship. The career themed line, Barbie I Can Be, refreshes with new careers including a sport themed range featuring Barbie I Can Be… Swim Champion.

Monster High is now the number two UK fashion doll property, while the Core Doll Assortment is the number one best-selling fashion doll (NPD February 2012 YTD).Launching in October, from Universal, is Monster High Ghouls Rule!, the first DVD, which will be supported by experiential events, digital marketing and a Halloween Doll Assortment. The Monster High Create A Monster Design Lab also taps into fashion and customisation play and will be a key line for the Christmas period.
Polly Pocket’s refreshed website, www.pollypocket has fun and advice for girls and mums and a range of products including the Stick n Play play-sets and the new Flip n Fun Hotel.

To coincide with the release of Disney/Pixar's Brave, Mattel will launch a feature doll based on the film’s heroine, Merida. 

Magical dolls and play-sets will celebrate the DVD release of Cinderella Diamond Edition and core Disney Princess dolls and play-sets continue, while MagiClip dolls and castles bring new features to the small doll category.
Fijit Friends are joined by the pint-sized, singing Fijit Friends Newbies and Fijit Yippits, dynamic dancing pets.

This year, Hasbro’s FurReal Friends brand celebrates ten years of bringing the animal kingdom to life with sophisticated plush electronic toys. New to the FurReal Friends family this autumn is Bouncy, My Happy-To-See-Me Pup. Featuring light-sensor technology, Bouncy recognises when children are near and will jump in circles, barking and yipping.

FurReal Friends also introduces Dizzy Dancers and puts a new spin on fantasy pet play with twirling, dancing pets. Pull the dizzy cord to set the pets in motion and watch as they spin and dance. Each Dizzy Dancer pet comes with a spinning base, dizzy cord and a twistin’ trick card that challenges girls to complete tricks with their pets. There are over 50 Dizzy Dancers to collect this year, and girls can change the top and bottom of any pet to create a custom collection of their own.

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic animated series launches this year and the brand celebrates the My Little Pony wedding in the autumn, when Princess Cadance marries her groom Shining Armour. Hasbro will be supporting the My Little Pony wedding with a marketing and PR campaign, including an exclusive wedding event where fans can be a guest at the wedding.

Finally, Hasbro will be relaunching Furby this autumn.

Winx Club is an animated fantasy series that follows Bloom, Stella, Flora, Musa, Tecna and Aisha – students enrolled in the fairy school Alfea College. The Winx Club transform into fairies who use magical powers to fight villains and save the world. 

Music and fashion is core to the toy line, with accessories and outfits rolled out into many waves and themes of dolls. This is expressed in three TV ads, with a first season campaign of 1,000 TVRs starting in August. PR will be provisioned for, with wide girl print and online coverage, plus events and competitions. 

The 11.5-inch Basic Fashion Dolls feature the Winx Club girls in two collections: Concert and Everyday. The 11.5-inch Deluxe Fashion Dolls feature deluxe outfits and hinged wings. 

The Winx Club Rock Concert Stage comes with music, sounds and a Bloom doll and will also be TV supported. The Magic Wing Bloom Feature Doll allows girls to be in control of a transformation. When Bloom is placed in the station girls slide the lever to see lights, hear a song and see Bloom spin and transform.

The Winx Club 3.75-inch Action Dolls are available in Believix and Concert themes. The Action Dolls are made to play with on the Frutti Music Bar Play-set.

The Winx Club Dance Mat features three songs. The Winx Club Rock Star Guitar has light-up strings. The Winx Club Rock Star Microphone has songs built in, or can be plugged into an MP3 player.

The Winx Club Believix Dress Assortment comes in a range of styles. The Winx Club Sparkling Wings Assortment feature deluxe Believix wing designs with prints signature to Bloom, Stella and Flora. The Transforming Tutu Assortment changes from skirt into tutu with wings and also comes in four styles.

Tomy has added Teacup Piggies Piglets to its offering. The interactive Piglets oink and giggle when their noses are pressed, and say ‘thank you’ when fed from their bottle. There are six available.

The Teacup Piggies Piglets Bedtime Set features two Piglets in a bedtime basket, each with a teacup to sit in, and a bottle and bib for feeds.

The original Teacup Piggies also continue, each with birth certificate, bottle and teacup. The Piggies chatter and giggle with over 25 phrases.

Tomy’s miniature doll range, Pinypon, is built around collectable, interchangeable dolls – with accessories, pets and play-sets also available. Girls can start their collection from £3.99 for a doll, available in eight versions, each with her own style. Girls can swap hairstyles, expressions, torsos, feet and accessories to create a different doll. 

Larger Pinypon play-sets include the Pinypon Car with Doll, featuring a picnic hamper with miniature cutlery, the Pinypon Campervan, with one doll and pet, holiday-themed accessories including deck chairs, surfboard and water feature. Top of the range is the Pinypon Apartment, which opens out to reveal a bedroom, TV lounge, kitchen, hammock and a roof terrace.

Harumika’s simple wrap and style technique enables girls to create personalised outfits without the need for any gluing, sewing or cutting.

New to Harumika this year is a refreshed assortment of Style Starter and Designer Dress Form sets, which include brightly coloured dress forms and new fabrics and accessories.

A new Style Studio carry case in a bright pink colour has also been introduced, so that girls can store all their Harumika bits and pieces and take them everywhere.
For designers interested in making more sophisticated dresses they can also choose from the Party Dress and Evening Gown Sets with extra skirt attachments, as well as the new Pop Diva set, which launches this summer.
Bandai is supporting Harumika with extensive TV advertising, consumer press activity and in-store demonstrations.

New Lalaloopsy characters will be introduced in 2012, with over 30 available by year-end. The Lalaloopsy Silly Hair doll will also see characters added. 

Lalaloopsy Littles will see new additions with over 12 characters by autumn. A feature doll will also join the range later in the year. 

The Mini Lalaloopsy range will have over 80 characters by autumn and new accessories. A new fun house theme will be added. 

The Micro Lalaloopsy figurines are also expanding with 12 new characters and more to come. 

Bratz will be further expanded this year. Bratz Funk ‘n’ Glow has a 3D light-up dress and tiara; Bratz Chic Mystique transforms into bird-inspired creatures; Bratz Crystalicious Deluxe is a hair-play doll; Bratz Boutique are fashion dolls. Also new are the ‘Glam gets wicked’ Bratzillaz. 

New Moxie Girlz lines include hair play doll, Moxie Girlz Bendy Braidz; Moxie Girlz Bubble Bath Surprise dolls, with a skirt that allows the doll to float; Moxie Girlz Horse Riding Club Doll and Horse. Moxie Girlz Horse Riding Club Stable with doll and pony is also available.

MGA Entertainment is also unveiling a brand new doll range this autumn. The Novi Stars (RRP £19.99) have landed on earth and are here to invade earth girls hearts, try new things, update fashion trends, and make new friends. Novi Stars combine the outrageous, out of this world entertainment trend with cutting edge features never before seen in doll play. For tween girls, Novi Stars is the only doll property with truly unique features that allow girls to express the “stars” within themselves with teenage quirks.

There are four dolls to collect in the range: Alie Lectric who can light up in multiple cosmic colours; Una Verse who has a body filled with glitter and water; Mae Tallick who can really talk and has a metalized body, a robot-like voice and says cosmic phrases and finally Ari Roma who has her own bubble-gum scented atmosphere and removable bubble helmet. The new Chloe’s Closet collection includes the Singing Chloe Ragdoll which sings two songs or says two phrases.

Finally, the fairy-tale world of Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom is also set to expand with new play-sets.
The Magical Toadstool play-set opens up to reveal two different play-sets in one, while the Magical Elf Tree play-set is a three storey elf factory where the elves’ clothes change colour and holly trees grow; includes four figurines. Princess Holly, Ben Elf, Nanny Plum and the Wise Old Elf. 

The range will also be supported by a TV advertising campaign and PR activity for 2012.

Gacha from Tomy welcomes new girls licences and toys across its whole range. Girls’ licences for 2012 include Hello Kitty, Disney Princess, My Little Pony and Littlest Pet Shop.

A collection of Disney Princess Gacha collectables in the form of stationery, figures and mirror sets are out now. In addition, coming soon will be Disney Princess trinket boxes and charms. With Secret of the Wings due in the autumn, Flair will have Disney Fairies from the film as well as other new additions. The Mini Fairy Collection features the new film characters, in the Mini Fairy Fashion Boutique the Disney Fairies can model five removable outfits.

Sky High Tink launches the glittery 12cm Tink doll up to three metres in the air. Colour Surprise Tink recognises coloured objects she is placed on, lighting up her wings in up to nine different colours to match the object.

Spin Master’s collectable range, Zoobles, became the Top New Girls Toy Property of 2011 (NPD EPoS 2011). In 2012 Zoobles continues to grow and is in the top three play-set themed collectables (NPD EPoS YTD February 2012).

In the second half a new family of Zoobles will launch, with Daddy Zoobles and baby Zooblings. In addition a fairy tale segment will introduce new characters to the line. In fashion dolls, Spin Master and Nickelodeon will launch the Victorious toy range this summer. The InnoTab was the top selling toy for December 2011 and is a best selling electronic gadget for kids in 2012 (NPD Jan - March 2012). This success is being built on with InnoTab 2.

The InnoTab 2 is available in pink and comes with a built-in 1.3 mega pixel camera with a rotating ‘self-portrait’ lens. As well as original functions the tablet also has a built-in microphone and video recording. Will be supported with a TV campaign and ongoing PR. Suitable for children aged four to nine.

Also in pink, the Kidizoom Twist boasts a two mega pixel camera with twisting lens, 4x digital zoom, 256MB of storage, video taking, voice recording and five built-in games. To be TV advertised between August and December.

Other Pink items like the KidiWatch, KidiMagic and Kidiminiz continue to be in the girls VTech range and are joined by the new VTech Secret Safe Diary, which includes a QWERTY keyboard, a virtual pet, a voice activated locking system, games, music activities, a secret drawer with memo pad and more. LeapFrog will be developing its software, apps and accessories and has licensed games for girls including Dora the Explorer, Disney Princesses and Disney Fairies. 

Disney Fairies; Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure is a new game for Leapster Explorer and LeapPad, for girls aged five to nine, which can help kids develop maths skills by solving puzzles and overcoming obstacles with Tinkerbell.

Also available will be Ballet Floor Game and a 2 in 1 Game featuring a Disney Princess-themed Snakes & Ladders and Ludo. Jumbo’s Peppa Pig puzzles and games will be bolstered by the release of the 3D Fairground Ride Game. Other new kits include Dangly Charms, with polymer clay beads, ribbons and feathers, which allow girls to create nine key rings and bag tags; and Wire Craft Rings, a kit that allows teens to make eight rings using wire crafting techniques. 

The range will benefit from marketing and TV support this year, with Shrink Craft Jewellery, Deluxe Charm Bracelets and the brand new Designer Jewellery as key TV advertised lines.

The Perfume Laboratory, Bath Bomb Factory and Luxury Soap Science continue, in Wild Science for Girls.
Lip Balm Laboratory allows girls to create fruity lip protectors, shimmering balms and solar lip screens.

Wild Science for Girls benefits from marketing support including TV and PR that engages directly with the audience.

There are new additions to the Pony Ranch in the form of six horses to collect. Each one reflects either a special breed or sporting discipline and comes with a rider, horse stall and accessories. With attention to detail, once they’ve put the ponies through their paces, it’s feeding time and the opportunity to muck out the stalls before the horses go in.

Launching in June is the new Princess Fantasy Castle range. The product features flying royal flags and with detailed towers, there’s a tiara, bracelet and ring. The royal prince and princess can take the grand staircase from the ballroom, with revolving dance floor, to the upper chambers of the castle.

In the tower, there’s a hiding place to store the crown jewels. With no detail forgotten and a host of additional rooms, carriages and magical flying horses, children will be able to role-play the fairytale.
