Despite being one of the most traditional parts of the girls toy market, doll sales remain strong, with many new innovations, interactive features and licensing deals in the sector. We find out what?s new.

A 360 degree communications programme – ‘Wow, see what happens when you play with Barbie’ – is brought to life through a full-year TV and cinema campaign, experiential marketing and product launches. With key product introductions throughout the year, highlights include the Barbie Photo Fashion Doll and Barbie Ultimate Closet. There will also be entertainment launches with The Princess & The Pop Star in cinemas and on DVD, while digital series, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse launches on www.barbie.co.uk.
A partnership with Royal Caribbean Cruises supports Barbie Family products, including Barbie Sisters Cruise Ship, with on-pack promotion. Career-themed line, Barbie I Can Be, refreshes with new careers including a sport themed range and I Can Be… Swim Champion.
The Monster High phenomenon continues – now the number two UK fashion doll property, while the Core Doll Assortment is the number one best-selling fashion doll YTD (source: NPD Data Feb 2012 YTD).
Launching in October, DVD Monster High Ghouls Rule will be supported by experiential events, digital marketing and a Halloween Doll Assortment. The Monster High Create A Monster Design Lab also taps into fashion and customisation play and will be a key line for Christmas.
Polly Pocket’s refreshed website, www.pollypocketbestdayever.co.uk has fun and advice for girls and mums and a range of products including the Stick N Play play-sets and the new Flip N Fun Hotel.
To coincide with Disney/Pixar’s Brave, Mattel will launch a feature doll based on the film’s heroine, Merida. Dolls and play-sets will celebrate the DVD release of Cinderella Diamond Edition, plus core Disney Princess dolls and play-sets continue, while MagiClip dolls and castles bring innovation to the small doll category.

Tomy’s miniature doll range, Pinypon, is built around the collectable, interchangeable Pinypon dolls – with accessories, pets and play-sets also available.
Girls can start their collection from £3.99 for a Pinypon doll – available in eight different versions, each with its own unique, customisable style.
Pinypon dolls have different pin on accessories such as handbags, and girls can mix and swap hairstyles, facial expressions, torsos and feet to create a different doll. The more girls collect, the more combinations they can create.
For girls who want to give their collection an early boost, Tomy’s range includes a Ten Figure Pack, with six dolls, four pets and 11 accessories for £22.99.
Pinypon Dolls are also available as Flower Theme Pinypon Scented Dolls, each with its own flower accessory, a distinctive floral scent, plus a tattoo transfer for girls to wear.
The Pinypon Gift Set Travel Pack is designed for taking the Pinypons out and about, with a choice of three carry cases featuring two dolls, a poodle pet, over 30 accessories and three Pinypon postcards.
In addition, the Pinypon Carry Bag comes with a doll, pet and accessories. There are several larger Pinypon play-sets, including the Pinypon Car with Doll, which includes a picnic hamper complete with a set of miniature knives and forks.
The Pinypon Campervan is also available, and comes with one doll and her pet, numerous holiday-themed accessories including deck chairs, surfboard and a water feature.
Top of the range is the Pinypon Apartment, a play-set which opens out to reveal a bedroom, TV lounge, kitchen, hammock and roof terrace.

This autumn/winter will see Vivid launch a new range of fashion dolls called Cutie Pops. With a trendy and distinct look, the dolls are inspired by accessorising with hearts, neon colours, rainbows, sweets, parties, surprises and more. The Cutie Pops Deluxe Dolls Assortment (£24.99) consists of three Cutie Pop dolls: Chiffon, Candi and Cookie.
Each doll has a unique style, which can then be further customised through the interchangeable hair and eye pieces and style pops which are all included with the set. Kids can build their accessory collection to include more outfits, style pops and hair and eye pieces with the Pop Packs Assortment, Hair and Eye Deco Packs Assortment and the Fashion Packs Assortment.
The Cutie Pops Pets Assortment features the dolls’ dog companions, each of which has articulated legs and head and fashion accessories including interchangeable ears and tails.
Following the highly successful launch of the One Direction Fashion Dolls in 2011, this year will see the craze continue with new introductions. Kids can expand their collection with the One Direction Celebz, which are so small they can fit in a pocket.
2012 is also the year of The Wanted Fashion Dolls. Fans of the band can now buy 12-inch dolls of the group. Each is designed to look like its human counterpart and comes with replica outfits as worn by each band member. Also available are The Wanted Celebz.

MGA Entertainment has a number of additions to its doll ranges this year.
New whimsical Lalaloopsy characters will be joining the range including Mango Tiki Wiki and Charlotte Charades (£26.99). With over 30 dolls available in the collection this year, there should be a character to appeal to everyone.
Lalaloopsy Littles (£14.99), the younger siblings to the original Lalaloopsy dolls, will also see new additions added to the range.
There will be over 12 characters available in the line including Matey Anchors, Scribbles Splash, Trinket Sparkles and Pita Mirage.
The Lalaloopsy Silly Hair doll (£26.99) range, with wacky, silly hair that bends, will see further new characters added. The doll comes with styling tools and clips, plus her pet will have a matching bendable tail.
MGA’s Bratz range will be further expanded throughout the year with several new themes added to the line including Bratz Funk ‘n’ Glow (£24.99), Bratz Chic Mystique (£24.99), Bratz Crystalicious (£19.99), Bratz Boutique (£29.99) and the Bratzillaz (£24.99).
Bratz dolls are suitable for children aged six-plus and all products will be supported by TV advertising, PR, marketing and social media.
Several new Moxie Girlz ranges will be added this year including Moxie Girlz Bendy Braidz dolls (£19.99), Moxie Girlz Bubble Bath Surprise dolls (£19.99) and a refresh on the Moxie Girlz equestrian range, Moxie Girlz Horse Riding Club.
The refreshed doll is dressed in contemporary riding gear and comes with a walking horse that has sound effects (£34.99).
The doll assortment can be purchased separately (£14.99). Moxie Girlz are suitable for children aged three plus.
MGA Entertainment is also planning to unveil a new doll collection in the autumn, with more details due to be announced shortly.

The new Charlie and Lola ‘Lola Loves...’ collection features a host of dolls, soft toys and activity and craft toys for children aged pre-school and upwards.
The collection is a good way to encourage imaginative and creative play. New doll toys include the Lola Loves My Best Dressed Friends Bean Dolls. The toys feature Lola wearing two different patterned fabric dresses with yellow wool hair.
The Lola Loves ‘My Bestest Friend’ Rag Doll is a soft Lola, which wears a red pinafore dress and stripy tights, while the new Lola Loves Dressing Up Doll features two mix and match outfits – a summer dress and winter outfit.
Also available is a range of dolls from the popular new The Adventures of Abney & Teal.
The collection includes the Bean Dolls, which line uo alongside the Abney Rag Doll and the Teal Rag Doll.

The Bigjigs Toys doll range has grown to a collection of over 20 characters. Each is made from quality materials and is soft to the touch. Plus, with so many to choose from, they are ideal for starting a collection and for tea parties too.

Golden Bear introduces Chloe’s Closet, a new dolls and accessory range which sees Chloe, the character from the cartoon series, brought to life in its own toy line.
A key line for 2012, which will be supported by TV advertising, is the soft fabric Dress-up Chloe Doll, complete with two dress-up outfits of a princess and cowgirl.
More soft, make-believe play can be had with the Singing Chloe Ragdoll, which sings two songs or talks with pre-recorded phrases.
For pocket money purchases, there are small soft toys to choose from including Chloe in an everyday outfit, Chloe dressed as a princess or Chloe’s own toy, Lovely Carrot.
For miniature role-play, there are three figurine sets to collect, plus Chloe’s Magical Dress-Up Closet which will be TV advertised this year. The closet play-set includes Chloe, three outfits with a Scene Card relating to each and the Magical Closet itself.
Golden Bear will support the range with a TV series, marketing and PR activity.

Flair combines the traditional play pattern of dolls and accessories with established and highly popular brands and licences.
Celebrating its 50th birthday in Italy, the baby boy doll, Cicciobello, has a new product for the UK too. In autumn Cicciobello Playtime will be bringing innovation to the traditional nurturing doll category.
The doll is an interactive baby boy with several play functions.
It has five accessories which it recognises and interacts with and three movements.
Established Cicciobello Love ‘n’ Care also continues and the Cicciobello range will be supported with TV advertising, marketing and PR campaigns.
With a new Disney film Secret of the Wings set for release in autumn 2012, Flair’s new Disney Fairies emulate the movie, along with other new additions to the range. The Mini Fairy Collection features the new film characters as well as existing favourites, and with the Mini Fairy Fashion Boutique, the Disney Fairies can model five removable outfits.
In addition, Sky High Tink is a glittery doll which can be launched from the flower launcher using the dragon-fly pull-cord and watch it take flight, reaching up to three metres in the air. Meanwhile, Colour Surprise Tink magically recognises coloured objects that she is placed on, lighting up her wings in up to ten different colours to match the object.
Disney Fairies will be supported with TV advertising, marketing and PR campaigns and there will be both a theatrical and home entertainment release of Secret of the Wings in autumn.

Zapf Creation has three new dolls hitting the shelves this autumn. Launching into the popular Baby born range is Baby born Interactive. The brand reached its 20th anniversary last year and continuing with the legacy of the celebrated dolls, the new interactive doll has ten accessories and eight life-like functions. Zapf says it is the only doll in the UK with that many functions. Baby born Interactive is suitable for children aged three plus (£39.99).
The new Baby born accessories include a cabriolet, a kitchen, a scooter and a horse.
Adding to Zapf’s growth in the large doll sector is Baby Annabell, which will see a refresh for autumn. Baby Annabell features realistic baby sounds and a cute facial expression. Its refreshed life-like functions – including mouth and eye movement, crying real tears and responding to human contact – will continue to be popular with girls next season. Suitable for ages three plus (£44.99).
Baby Annabell’s accessory range includes a bed which comes with a lullaby mobile, while there will also be a three in one highchair swing, comfort seat and a deluxe pram combination available.
The soft-bodied Chou Chou range will also have a new addition in the form of the new Baby Monitor dolls later this year. The doll will show you what it needs via the baby monitor, whether it’s food, comfort or sleep. Suitable for ages three plus (£44.99). The range also includes Chou Chou Rock a Bye doll (£34.99).
All of the new doll additions to Zapf Creation’s portfolio will be supported by TV advertising.

Spin Master and Nickleodeon are launching the Victorious toy range in the second half of 2012.
Girls will be able to experience Tori Vega performing for them in their own home with the Tori Singing Doll. Raise the microphone to Tori’s mouth to hear the doll sing the show’s hit theme song Make It Shine. Raise her other arm into her signature stance to hear the crowd go wild.
The entry price fashion Tori Doll has seven points of articulation, rooted hair and dresses from key episodes of the show.
Little girls can also play out scenes from the show with Tori, Cat, Jade or Trina dolls.
Victorious fans can also personalise their mini-locker just like the students at Hollywood Arts, with multiple stickers and keep secrets or the school themed accessories supplied inside.
The Victorious Locker Decorator is the perfect size to play along with the Victorious dolls.
Additional musical items will be available including the Victorious Microphone and Victorious Headset.
Prices range from £14.99 to £24.99, available from autumn and suitable for ages five and over.

The new 2012 portfolio for John Crane introduces Trudi, a plush collection, joining the Lilliputiens range.
The Sporty Rag Doll is dressed in a grey and green top and sporty red trainers. Its strawberry blonde hair is tied up in bunches with a red satin bow and the doll has been double stitched to ensure strength.
The doll is joined by other characters including the Green Rag Doll, the Teddy Dress Rag Doll and the pink Ballerina Rag Doll.
Pintoy offers a collection of doll’s accessories including the Doll Stroller, which is made from natural and pink wood with four rubberised wheels to ensure a safe and stable ride.
The stroller also features four pink rings along a bar at the front to keep dolls entertained.
When playtime is over, the stroller folds away for easy storage.

The iconic Tiny Tears brand continues to be a success for John Adams, with a refreshed version of the Tiny Tears Classic doll being introduced for this year. The original crying, feeding and wetting doll comes with a new look and new clothes for 2012, as well as essential accessories including potty, bottle, pacifier, pull up knickers and hairbrush. Retailing at around £19.99 and available from June, the new Classic Tiny Tears doll will have TV advertising and PR support throughout the year.
John Adams is also expanding its Girls World range with the introduction of Gabriella, the Girls World Styling Doll, aimed at girls aged four and over.
Measuring 42cms, the fashion doll comes with long blonde hair and includes comb, clips, braid, slides and colour extensions.
Also included is a beauty bag. Retailing at around £19.99, the doll is available from June and joins the Girls World Styling Head.
Featuring growing hair tresses, the classic Styling Head is the original Girls World product, which enables girls to create their own individual hairstyles using the accessories included. Girls can add in colourful extensions, plait, braid and twist the hair into any style. The range will be TV advertised and have PR support throughout the year.
