A Scottish inventor is preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign to bring a toy robot that promises to change the way kids learn about STEM to market.

Dr. Alexander Enoch is the brains behind Marty, a robot character that can be controlled via a smartphone to walk, dance and play football.

The robot has already ben described as one of the UK’s ‘most exciting technological spin-outs,’ made entirely out of 3D printable parts.

Enoch, a 30-year old invetor from Edingburgh has secured the backing of the Royal Academy of Engineering, helping him to found his own company, Robotical.

“Robotical can help children learn coding skills, mechanics and give them hands on engineering skills,” Enoch told The Scotsman.

“The robot will help more kids get into STEM subjects and give them the chance to get hands on with robotics.”

Born out of a series of larger robots developed as part of Enoch’s PhD at Edinburgh, Marty has been billed as the cheaper, simpler verison of what is in the market today, yet more expressive and engaging for younger children.

‘There’s not a huge number out there,” continued Enoch. “There are some smart toys – which are basically remote control cars with legs – and anything beyond that costs hundreds of pounds which is really geared towards adult hobbyists.

“Marty is much more simple, anyone can get him working.”

Enoch is now preparing to launch a crowdfunding campaign to fund a production run of Marty products. A total of 1,000 Martys will be made and sold via the Robotical website.

If the sale goes well, Enoch hopes major retailers will step in with orders.
