Historic Scottish toy retailer, Junners Toymaster is to close down after 16 years of independent trading.

The Elgin-based toy shop confirmed that it will cease trading via a Facebook message to its followers and customers sent out at 5.14pm yesterday (November 24th).

Following the announcement, customers have flooded the shop’s social media site to lament the impending closure.

Junners owner, George Duncan said after 28 years in retail, having managed a newsagents, a toy shop in Buckie and the Elgin store, h and his wife had come to the tough decision to shut up shop for both personal and business reasons.

“Difficult as it is to tell the staff and to close the shop, it is the right thing for us to do at our stage in life,” he said.

Duncan has cited increased competition from online and chain outlets as the reason for the store’s closure.

“Business is tough,” he told Northern Scot. “You look at South Street and other bits of Elgin and there are empty shops, it is having a tough time.

“Now there is Home Bargains, B&M, the supermarkets – everyone seems to selling discount toys. We took a look at it two or three months ago and made the decision.”

Junners will be open its doors Friday morning for a Closing Down Sale.

“We have a lot of toys to sell and we have 25 per cent off so hopefully shoppers will come along and get some bargains for Christmas,” said Duncan.

Junners Toymaster expects to close its doors for good in mid to late January next year.
